The author of this article, Deborah Netburn, creates passionate diction throughout by using certain words. She starts off the article by saying, "This summer, darkness will fall over the face of America" this statement alone shows how much she passion she has for the topic. Because she was interested in the idea, her word usage caused readers to be intrigued by the article. This diction, shows that the author has an emotional attachment to the topic.
Netburn appeals to pathos when talking about the precious time that occurs during a solar eclipse. She brings up the point that these scientists only have about 3 minutes to get as much information about the suns atmosphere as they can. She does this to explain to the audience why the phenomenon of the solar eclipse is so important to scientific discovery in America. Because she appeals to the audiences emotions, it can cause a spread of information of the topic, that way a good portion of America will be aware of the soon coming solar eclipse. The author uses a didactic tone in order to make the reader aware of the events that will soon be occurring in the nation. She explains what and how a solar eclipse works so the reader can get a full understanding of the work that has to go in to collect information that a solar eclipse gives. The main purpose that Netburn had when writing this story was to make people aware of the significance of the solar eclipse. So much work from scientists goes into getting ready for the phenomenon, and she wants to make US residents aware of the event. She also went about educating the people on how solar eclipses work so they could get a better idea of why the event is so major. One last appeal that Netburn makes in her piece is syntax. She uses 4 short sentences at the beginning tog et the reader to pause and realize what is happening and what a solar eclipse is. It gives more meaning and a bigger, but simpler explanation to what happens during this time. http://www.latimes.com/science/sciencenow/la-sci-sn-eclipse-science-20170512-htmlstory.html
